Finally, a long-term study reports a finding that we all knew was true - that despite the use of fluoride, sugar consumption is the main culprit for dental decay as reported in the Journal of the American Dental Association
Bruce Lee Pihlstrom, DDS, MS, discusses the new study, reporting that "no prior prospective study has followed children from early childhood to early adulthood to investigate the role of sugar intake in dental caries. The purpose of this study was to assess whether various amounts of sugar intake affected the occurrence of dental caries from ages 6 through 18 years."
With no surprise to us, they found that the more sugar you ingested, the more dental caries or tooth decay you had, and it didn't matter how much fluoride you ingested.
No wonder after 70 years of water fluoridation, dental decay is still a "silent epidemic" as reported by US surgeon generals every year since 2010.
